Musician mentors children at D.C. community center 2 miles away from Sunday shootingFeb 8th, 2017 | By owner | Category: Community, Education, Entertainment, News & Features
WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Strumming his guitar, singing and laughing with a group of pre-schoolers, there’s no question musician Mike Scala has a special bond with children.
“It’s about change. It’s about stepping outside the box,” he says. “Having faith that things will get better, because I think faith is the strongest human emotion.”
Scala’s appearances in D.C. are a way of giving back, after growing up in a rough neighborhood in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
“You grow up in these neighborhoods and these kids know,” the 27-year-old musician says. “You can lose a lot of people along the way and that’s not an easy thing to deal with.”
MPD homicide detectives are now investigating the shooting death of 17-year-old Derronn Stover, fatally wounded Sunday evening along Burns Street, Northeast.
