Mary M. Treadwell, a former wife of Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry, died earlier this week at her home in Baltimore. She was 71, and had reportedly suffered from breast cancer.
Treadwell, who was married to Barry for five years from 1972 to 1977, when they divorced, had been a key figure on the D.C. community stage for more than 30 years, as well as one of its as a civil rights activist during the 1960s. She’d also assisted Barry in launching the federally-funded Youth Pride Inc., which became D.C.’s most renowned jobs training program. After Barry left Youth Pride to concentrate on his political aspirations, Treadwell took over as its director.
